In the clip that I previously posted, Wesch refereces back to video he made called "A Vision of Students Today." As he was showing clips form this video, I realized that I had seen it already in another class. It was my public speaking class last semester, and my teacher played this video to help us think a of a school related topic to write a speech on. At the time I was actually very moved by this video because I could relate to all of the statements the students were making. I also found the statistics very engaging. I had no idea that Michael Wesch was the same person to make both videos. After realizing this, I continued to explore Wesch's youtube channel. I found it inspiring that he has become a famous professor and researcher because of his youtube videos and studies. Before this internet studies class, I had no idea who Michael Wesch was even though I had already been affected by his work. This alone is an example of how the internet and media are constantly intertwined in the college culture.

internet on college culture

knowledge
I found this video of Michael Wesch from the TED series of lectures. It discusses how internet and technology are used by college students and how it affects them. Being a college student, I found a lot of truth in the different points discussed in the lecture. One of the quotes he used to explain his theory was from Neil Postman's book Amusing Ourselves to Death. I read this book last semester for a Communications class. Although Postman published this quote before the internet was necessity for college students, it still holds relevance to the culture of college students.

Setting Standards
Below is a link to a clip of an interview with Tim Berners-Lee, creator of the World Wide Web, and Karen Bartleson of the IEEE Standards Association about having international standards for html. I saw this on a friend's blog, and I found this very interesting to watch. Even as an everyday internet user, I never think about how the Web works. In the interview Bartleson talks about how groups of people come together and discuss the different possibilities for standards on the web. Our generation sees the World Wide Web as a world in itself with rules and regulations that are implied and seem inflexible. However, this interview reveals that the laws which govern the web are thoroughly discussed and debated before being applied.
